Poring over colonial-era journals and volumes of letters proved just as tedious and time-consuming as translating the grimoire spells. Between Zori’s freelance work and the library research, the next several days consisted of long, exhausting hours with her face in either a computer or a book.

While she was away from the house, the shadow demon paced restlessly, stalled in progress with Levi’s grimoire and unable to assist with library research off-property. Zori refused to steal any more books than was absolutely necessary from Cresswell Library. She was already dreading the day they would realize one was missing.

By Friday morning, both human and demon were grumpy and tired from the grueling schedule and the upheaval of their routine. To make matters worse, they had only a few breadcrumbs of information to show for their efforts. When Zori left for the library that afternoon, Myrkrið made her promise to come home before dark. Movie night was happening tonight no matter what; research could wait. A few more days of house arrest wouldn’t kill him. Few things, if any, could actually.

Zori had started the week with the Graydon journals. Lazarus’ writing was particularly cryptic, which made sense if he was trying to hide his practice from prying eyes. There was one coded entry from just after the stocks incident that she thought could refer to either a grimoire or possibly the Bible.

It read, “Granted my heart’s desire, I no longer have need of the Word. May it rest safe in the bosom of the Temple, unsullied by the hands of the ignorant.”

The Cresswell documents were more straightforward. They lacked ornate riddles but had no mention of either grimoire. Bazel Cresswell’s journal did have a couple entries that spoke of a very brief trial before the witch burning, organized and led by Elbert Poole. She had hoped the latter would be more descriptive. His writing was the subject of today’s studies, which so far had not yielded any leads.

Her phone alarm buzzed and Zori sighed, it was time to pack it in for the day. Frustrated, she dropped the thin brown folio of letters in her hand onto the desk, where it landed with an indignant slap. A couple of sheets of paper slipped out and drifted onto the floor. She picked them up and began to tuck them back inside the paper organizer when some text caught her eye.

“From Mr. Elbert Poole

To Rev. Hezekiah Poole, Church of the Immaculate Harvest”

Surely, she had time to read just one more letter. Sitting back down, she carefully scanned the text and her breath caught in her throat.

“Ill news, brother. Though we made thorough search of his person and estate, we did not find that accursed tome. I only pray that it be destroyed with the damned wretch himself in the cleansing fire.”

Excellent, wherever Lazarus’ mysterious “bosom of the Temple” was, the witch hunters never found it. The grimoire must still be out there.

Her demon wasn’t going to like it, but Zori knew where she had to go next.
